Peter D. Gardner Scholarship Fund

Peter Gardner was a mathematics teacher, administrator and coach at Brunswick High School for forty-three years.  He was Brunswick High’s first and longest serving varsity soccer coach. Peter had 463 wins, including 6 state Class A championships (10 state appearances in all) and a 69-27 postseason record with the Dragons.

“I have to say that the 43 years at Brunswick [as math teacher, assistant principal] were incredible,” he said. “I love teaching … I really enjoyed the interaction with the kids. And I had a lot of support. I loved my time in Brunswick. The kids were awesome, the parents were super, super good in their support of the program and myself. Administration, faculty, the whole nine yards.”

Peter holds the State of Maine record for the most boys varsity soccer coaching wins. After retiring from Brunswick High School, Peter went on to coach at Richmond High School. At Richmond, Peter added 2 more Maine State Championships to bring his total to 8. He believed in the value of hard work, strong and consistent effort and commitment to excellence in education and the pursuit of one’s established goals for success.

The Brunswick High School Class of 1980 led the effort to establish this fund, using proceeds from their Annual Dragon Golf Scramble for Scholarships. Awards for this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be graduates of Brunswick High School who participated in sports and have expressed an interest in teaching.
