Margaret “Peggy” Murphy was born in 1948 in Brunswick. In her youth, she traveled all around the United States with her parents while her father served in the Army Air Force Reserves. She attended Bowdoin Elementary Schools and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1966. Peggy obtained a Business Degree from Bliss College in 1968, and worked for the Brunswick School Department for 38 years before her retirement in December of 2008.
Peggy and her husband Louis M. Murphy, Jr. made their home in Bowdoin. They enjoyed the company of many nieces and nephews who would be treated to overnight slumber parties and camping in the back yard. She enjoyed cooking and hosting family gatherings, including spontaneous poolside barbecues. Peggy also enjoyed knitting, crafting, and shopping with family and friends. Peggy and Louis enjoyed traveling and would sometimes reunite with Louis’ friends from the U.S. Air Force and distant relatives. They spent several winter vacations with friends on the local ski slopes.
Dale Douglass, former Superintendent of Brunswick Schools, said of Peggy “She was a member of our business office team and I remember her efficiency and attention to detail, but most importantly, her sense of humor. She was part of a team that every Superintendent dreams of having in their critical roles.”
Peggy passed away in 2023. Awards from this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be residents of the Town of Bowdoin.
