The Whitten Fund

Sarah_Whitten GroupThis fund resulted from a bequest by Sarah Whitten, a Topsham resident. She directed money from this fund be used to help needy Topsham students. Miss Whitten was a school teacher in Topsham elementary schools for many years. A September 2, 1937 article about her appeared in The Brunswick Record and was entitled “Miss Whitten of Topsham Has Interesting Mementos of 92-Year Life.”  The article described Sarah Whitten as a “spirited and youthful oldster” who, at the time, was living alone in her Pleasant Street home that had been purchased by her family 108 years earlier.  Awards from this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be residents of Topsham.
