In honor of the ongoing initiative and commitment demonstrated by Jordan Cardone-Ruwet in advocating for the establishment of the Brunswick Area Teen Center program, People Plus established this award in connection with her retirement after 18 years of service coordinating the program.
The Brunswick Area Teen Center provides free after-school drop-in programs for youths in grades 6 to 12. The program provides a place to socialize, eat nutritious food and unwind in a supervised, safe, youth-oriented and fun environment. The program is available to students of the Brunswick and Mount Ararat school systems.
Jordan was one of the original catalysts in getting the program established. She joined forces with other parents and Curtis Memorial Library staff to organize a group of teens who advocated for the program at various town meetings. Jordan recognized that boredom for teens was an obstacle to overcome to stay out of trouble, and she envisioned a place to keep teens free of boredom. Finding a suitable space was difficult until People Plus invited the teens to use their empty bingo hall. Jordan’s children got involved and invited their friends, parents, and area college students to help paint and decorate the new space. Bowdoin College donated furniture, and with a volunteer only staff, the Teen Center at People Plus opened in June 2005.
In the early years, Jordan was a tireless advocate for the program. She placed fundraising coffee cans at various locations in the area. When the Teen Center became an official program at People Plus, Jordan was hired as the Program Coordinator, a position she would hold until her retirement in 2023. The program has evolved over the years to offer trips to locations in the area, arts and crafts projects, games, mentoring and assistance with driver’s education classes. “Jordan has had a considerable positive impact on the lives of countless teens and her oversight ensured that teens have a safe place to gather,” said Tom Farrell, chair of the Teen Center Advisory Committee. “Jordan’s determination, energy and commitment have all contributed to making the Teen Center successful.”
Awards from this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be a past or present member of the Brunswick Area Teen Center program.
