Dr. Widmer was a long-time member of the BASAF Board of Directors and a past-President of the Fund. He joined the BASAF Board in October of 1977. The Board of Directors expressed their appreciation for his service by designating this award in his honor.
Dr. Widmer was a graduate of Lebanon (Kentucky) High School, Centre College, and The University of Louisville Dental School. While in the United States Army, he served first as an enlisted soldier in Kentucky and then as a Captain in the Army Dental Corps in Hawaii. In 1966, he and his wife Lois moved to Brunswick where he established his own dental practice and became an active community member.
Dr. Widmer was a founding co-President of the Merrymeeting Dental Society and also served as President of the Maine Chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry and the New England Dental Society. He was also a member of the Brunswick Rotary Club.
Dr. Widmer loved family, gardening, music, oceans, flying, songbirds, dogs, sunsets, trains, yodeling, fondue and homebrewing. He was private pilot, often finding peace in the open skies above Merrymeeting Bay and the Midcoast of Maine. One of his great joys was singing and playing music. For many years, Dr. Widmer sang with The Choral Art Society in Portland and was a faithful member of the First Parish Church Choir, where he served as Chairman of the Music Committee.
Awards from this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be graduates of Brunswick High School.
