Alfred (Al) Obery was born and raised in Augusta, Maine. After graduating from Cony High School, Al went to Colby College where he met his wife Mary. Al went on to Tufts Dental School, and subsequently served 2 years in the U.S. Army. Mary and Al moved to Topsham in 1960 where Al opened his dental practice. Mary and Al raised four sons who all graduated from Mt. Ararat.
In addition to the twenty years he spent on the BASAF board as a past president, Al was also a member of the Brunswick and Topsham Water District Board for over 25 years. He was actively involved on various boards at St. Charles Church. Al was a member of the Civil War Roundtable and an active member of the Brunswick Golf Club. Mary and Al also officiated at Bowdoin Track Meets for over 40 years. After retiring in 1993, Al and Mary traveled the United States and Europe, where they especially enjoyed taking river cruises with old college friends. Al passed away on July 9, 2019.
Awards from this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be graduates of Mt. Ararat High School.
