In 2001, Mrs. Velma McGraves and her daughters, Jane McGraves and Janet McGraves, established this fund in memory of Donald E. McGraves (Velma’s husband) and Douglas G. McGraves (Velma’s son).
Donald was born in Brunswick on April 30, 1914. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1938 and was a state champion weight lifter during his college days. Donald was a teacher at Brunswick, Waterville and Wiscasset High Schools, as well as at the University of Maine Brunswick Annex. Donald passed away at the age of 47 in 1962.
Douglas was a member of the Brunswick High Class of 1961. He was employed for a number of years as an auto parts manager for new vehicle dealerships. Douglas was an amateur radio operator who also built and flew model airplanes.
Awards from this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be graduates of Brunswick High School.
