Charlie Gordon Award Fund

A native of Winthrop Maine, Charlie Gordon was an enduring presence at Brunswick High School from 1974 to 2020.  He was a very successful basketball player at Winthrop High School where he was a member of the State Championship Team of 1965 and enjoyed continued success at the University of Southern Maine as a player and team captain.  After college, Charlie competed in a semi-pro basketball league based out of Portland, Maine.  Charlie was an avid runner, competing in over 300 road races including multiple marathons and 50 and 100-mile ultra-marathons. While in Brunswick, he was the Bowdoin Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach for 18 years and continues to be a very loyal fan.  His enthusiasm for sports extended to tennis, canoe racing, and most recently golf, and as a lifelong boxing fan, he had the unique privilege of meeting and spending time with his all-time hero Muhammad Ali.

During his time at BHS he taught Sociology, Geography, Psychology, US History, and American Government.  As Senior Class Advisor for 40 years, he read the students’ names for all graduation ceremonies and was always willing to chaperone any school event.  Charlie had the special opportunity to teach three of his children at BHS. His favorite activity is spending time with his family on Lower Narrows Pond in Winthrop, ME.

In conjunction with Charlie’s retirement, this scholarship fund was established and supported by many students, friends, and family whom Charlie influenced over the years.  The Brunswick High School Class of 1980 led the effort to establish this fund, using proceeds from their Annual Dragon Golf Scramble for Scholarships.  His love of sports, generosity, sense of humor, and authentic interest in people have created many enduring friendships.  Awards for this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be graduates of Brunswick High School who participated in sports and have expressed an interest in teaching.
