Mal Strange Award Fund

Mal_StrangeA native of Brunswick, Mal has been a enduring presence in the Brunswick area golf scene since the 1950’s.  A member of the Maine Golf Hall of Fame, Mal began caddying at Brunswick Golf Club at age 12.  In 1952, he won the Maine High School Golf Championship and the Junior Maine State Golf Championship. Military service took him away from the area briefly, but he continued to hone his golf game as a member of the U.S. Air Force Golf Team. Shortly after Mal returned to the area, he became the Golf Pro at Brunswick Golf Club in 1959, a position he would hold for over 37 years.

During his time at Brunswick Golf Club, Mal was involved with the design and construction of Brunswick Golf Club’s “front nine” which opened in 1969. Since the year 2000, Mal has been the golf coach for the Brunswick High School Golf Team. He has been giving golf lessons to golfers of all abilities for over 60 years!

In connection with Mal’s retirement, this scholarship fund was established and supported by the many individuals Mal has influenced over the years.  His love of the game of golf, coupled with his personal charm and ability to relate to people, have created enduring relationships and his lifetime success as a PGA Club Professional.

Awards from this fund are based on student financial need, after which recipients are requested to be graduates of Brunswick High School who participated in the golf program.
