Funds

Established in 1954, BASAF was the inspiration of Mario Tonon, then Principal of Brunswick High School. Early growth of the Fund can be attributed primarily to contributions from local businesses and fund-raising activities by students. Continued growth in later years resulted from a combination of sound fiscal management and donations of many amounts from individuals and estates. The most significant contributions came from the Estate of Emery Booker, who created a trust of nearly $1 million, and a distribution from the Estate of Emile Bouchard of $100,000 to the endowment. The Brunswick Area Student Aid Fund is an affiliate of Dollars for Scholars®, a program of Scholarship America®.

Charitable Planning

The Brunswick Area Student Aid Fund is an important and appropriate choice for consideration for charitable giving or estate planning. This is particularly true if you live and/or work in the greater Brunswick/Topsham area, or if you have a philanthropic interest in supporting education. One can take pride in being able to make a gift that provides significant help to others. There also may be valuable tax advantages for people who make charitable gifts.

The gift of a scholarship is a generous and significant act which positively impacts the donor, the recipient, and the community as a whole. The Brunswick Area Student Aid Fund is a well-managed, credible non-profit organization which is associated with a national organization ~ Scholarship America® ~ with an impeccable reputation in managing scholarship programs.

Memorial Fund

The gift of a scholarship is a living memorial to a loved one, and one in which another life is positively impacted.

To establish a Memorial Fund at the time of bereavement, please inform the Funeral Director of your wishes. The Funeral Director then will include in the obituary notice:

All donations are acknowledged, and a list of donors is sent to the family of the person being memorialized. Please note that it is not necessary to contact BASAF at the time of bereavement. The family may elect to wait before making further arrangements regarding the scholarship fund.

Types of Scholarship Funds

Permanent Named Scholarship Fund
- Provides a scholarship award each year to a worthy student in the name of the donor or loved one.
- Contributed money will be invested by the Brunswick Area Student Aid Fund management, and income will be used to provide an annual award in the name of the donor or loved one.
- Requires a minimum contribution to ensure perpetuity of the award in the designated amount.
One-Time Named Scholarship Fund
- Provides a one-time scholarship award in the name of the donor or a loved one at graduation the following June.
- Requires a minimum contribution.
- Is an alternative to establishing a permanent fund.
- Acknowledgement of the upcoming award.
General Scholarship Fund
- Allows for donations to be combined with other contributed dollars for annual awards.
- May be a contribution of any amount.
- May be made in honor of, or in memory of, an individual. Acknowledgement of donation will be sent to individual being honored, or to family of person being memorialized.

BASAF makes directed assistance available at the request of donors, provided the administration of directed assistance is appropriate with our mission. We currently manage a number of funds that support students graduating from a specific school or who are pursuing a specific program. BASAF would like to work with any donor wishing to create a restricted fund to ensure mutual compatibility and comfort.
